I think the big problem with facebook 'pages' is that there is no clear mechanism for informing you of updates, unlike the way friends' statuses appear on your homepage.
In order to track what's going on in the various groups, I have to actually go and visit them. So I generally don't. (There is a 'group summary' page which is distinctly unhelpful.)
